Note from the artist
Yellowstone National Park was the first national park ever established. Before it became a national park it was a land of fire and brimstone, home to the native tribes of the region. While most tribes frequented the area for ceremonies, only one lived there continuously (Wind River Shoshone).
When Jim Berger and other 18th-century frontiersmen returned home with stories of a region of bursting geysers, bubbling mud pots, and rainbow-colored hot pots, no one believed them.
After the Hayden survey returned with photographic proof of the region's beauty in 1871, Ulysses S. Grant established the area as a national park.
This map balances white space with intricate details, giving it a light, minimalist feeling while including many park features.
