Natural hot springs in a stunning atmosphere
The Boiling River hot springs is located in one of the most stunning regions of Montana – Yellowstone National Park. It’s the only hot springs in the park that is open to the public.
Guests can drive almost all the way to the hot springs and park in one of the parking lots on either side of the North Entrance Road. From there, it’s a short walk down a well-developed trail to a fence, which marks the soaking area.
A small retaining wall and steps lead into the river, where you can enjoy a perfect mixture of hot water from the boiling river flowing into the edge of the Gardner River. Guests have built small walls out of river rock to trap the hot water and create a pool of water at the perfect temperature.

The water from the Boiling River emerges at 140°F (60°C). However, this water mixes with the cold water of the Gardner River, creating an ideal soaking temperature.

Bozeman Hot Springs renovated their entire grounds in 2022, taking the venue from awesome to even better. This place is located just outside Bozeman, making it a a perfect day trip from Bozeman or Billings.
Visitors here enjoy 12 pools ranging from 59°F to 106°F (15°C – 41°C). The venue suits solo travelers, couples, families, and events, such as company retreats or birthday parties. Call in advance to book the event space. Event space fees range from $25/hr to $100/hr, depending on your needs.
In addition to the pools, guests enjoy access to wet and dry saunas, a gym, and childcare services, and you can even enroll in swimming lessons. Check their online event schedule for on-site musical performances at the poolside stage.

Norris Hot Springs is a quaint, well-equipped hot springs located in a natural area of the Madison River Valley not far from Bozeman.
While it’s not a big resort with multiple facilities, it has everything you need, including an on-site restaurant that cooks with local ingredients. The hot spring pool sits in the center of the property. The water is heated to a perfect 100°F (38°C) in the summer and 106°F (41°C) in the winter.
It’s not the closest hot spring to Billings, but it’s still within a 3-hour drive, making it suitable for a weekend trip.

Guests who want to stay overnight can park their RV or pitch a tent in a designated camping space.

6. Potosi Hot Springs

A quaint retreat
Potosi Hot Springs is the perfect hot spring getaway for anyone looking to spend a night or two in a lush valley of Montana’s Rocky Mountains.
Generally, the site is only available to guests who stay in one of the four on-site cabins along South Willow Creek. However, from Wednesday to Thursday, 12 pm to 2 pm, the entire site can be rented for groups of up to 40. When overnight guests are here, they have the site to themselves.
Potosi Hot Springs offers a large outdoor pool built into the hillside with a beautiful rock outcropping towering above the waters. Guests also have access to an indoor tub and wood-burning sauna.
Potosi Hot Springs is not the closest hot springs to Billings. At 3.5 hours away, it’s not ideal for a day trip, but it works for a weekend.
Accommodation
Potosi offers guests four cabins, all of which sit along South Willow Creek, with views of the greenery and hillsides of the Tobacco Root Mountains. Cabins hold up to six people. There is no WiFi or TV in the cabins.

A natural oasis
Renova Warm Spring is the perfect hot spring for anyone looking for a natural, undeveloped hot spring near Billings, Montana. Renova lies on an estuary of the Jefferson River, just south of Whitehall, in a valley at the foot of the Tobacco Root Mountains.
Like the Boiling River, Renova consists of a hot spring flowing into a larger river. Rock barriers trap the hot water, mixing it with cooler river water, and creating an ideal soaking temperature. Visitors can choose from various soaking pots built from stacked river rocks and stone masonry.
To reach Renova, you need a 4×4 vehicle. It’s inaccessible in wet or snowy weather. Plus, it gets washed out in the spring runoff when the waters of the Jefferson River rise. The best time to visit is from July to October.
Drinking, DUIs, and drug use: Renova Hot Springs has a reputation for underage drinking, DUIs, and drug use. It’s better to choose any of the other hot springs near Billings on this list, especially for families.
